John Hays, American lawyer, manufacturer. member Henderson & Hays, 1863-1874.


Hays, John was born on February 2, 1837 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of John and Ellinor Blaine (Wheaton) Hays.


Bachelor of Arts, Dickinson College, 1857 (Doctor of Laws, same, 1914).


In service August 1862-May 1863, as 2d and First lieutenant, First lieutenant and adjunct, 130th Regiment Pennsylvania Vols. Acting assistant adjutant general 2d Brigade, 3d Division, 2d Army Corps, and special inspecting officer. Acting aid on staff of General William Hays.

Selected to superintend burial of enemy’s dead for front of ½ mile on “Bloody Lane”. Participated in battles of Antietam. Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.

Struck in clothing and person 7 times, and horse killed at Chancellorsville. Practiced, 1859-1898. Specialized in corporation law.

Established in Supreme Court of the United States Court liability of nat. banks for safe-keeping of special deposits held without compensation. Member Henderson & Hays, 1863-1874. President Carlisle Deposit Bank, 1874-1893.

Editor and proprietor Carlisle Herald, 1877-1909. President Carlisle Gas & Water Company, Frog Switch & Manufacturing Company, etc. Trustee Metzger College, Carlisle.
