He was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on 11 March 2011. As a Deputy to the Executive Director of United Nations Women, Michelle Bachelet, Hendra leads the bureau which provides policy analysis, research and training, programme management and oversight. Before joining United Nations Women, Hendra served the United Nations in many countries.
He was United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (United Nations Development Programme) Resident Representative in Viet Nam, United Republic of Tanzania and Latvia.
He has also worked at the highest level with United Nations Member States on development programming and conducting development policy dialogue. From 2000 to 2002, Hendra served as the Deputy Director of United Nations Development Programme’s Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships.
In this position, he led the management of relationship building with donors, the private sector, civil society and foundations. Hendra obtained his master’s degree in development studies from the University of Toronto and his Bachelor of Arts from Queen's University in Political Studies.
