An older brother was Thomas Hickey, the painter. He worked under a local carver before coming to England in 1776 and entering the Royal Academy Schools. Edmund Burke was enthusiastic in promoting his work.
Among Hickey"s best-known works is the monument to David Louisiana Touche in Delgany, County Wicklow.
