John Hilliard was born in 1945 in Lancaster, Lancashire, United Kingdom.
In 1962, John enrolled at Lancaster College of Art, where he remained till 1964, when he entered Saint Martin's School of Art, graduating in 1967.
John's first photographic works were made in the late 1960's. In the early 1970's, he started a series of works, concerned with the mechanics of photography — the attributes and capabilities of the camera itself. By 1972, the emphasis of his work shifted to an exploration of such common devices, as cropping, focussing and captioning, which direct the reading and interpretation of photographic images. In the 1980's, colour photography became the subject of Hilliard's work. He was especially interested in how photography targeted a desired result in advertising and media.
Between 1983-1984, the photographer's works were shown in Germany at such museums, as Kölnischer Kunstverein, Kunsthalle Bremen and Frankfurter Kunstverein. In the mid-1990's, John decided to expand the scale of his works and started printing on canvas or vinyl. In 1999, the most important retrospective of his works was held in three art galleries in Germany. In 2015, he held his exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, and the following year, John's work were shown at the Galleria Massimo Minini in Brescia.
Also, since 1968 to 2010, John held the post of a teacher at different educational institutions, including the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Currently, he lives in London and holds the post of a professor at the Slade School Of Fine Art.
