John moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1971. John played for Cadboro Bay which later became Bays United soccer club John went to Mount Douglas Secondary School where he played on a soccer team with notable teammates Jeff Mallett and Simon Keith.
John played for the University of Victoria Vikings and was part of the 1987 national winning side.
John played professionally for the Victoria Vistas of the Canadian Soccer League. John"s father Brian Hughes was also a professional soccer player.
