He had early training in the office of one Arthur Smith. In 1891 he began practice in partnership with Cornelius Curtin, and after a later period (1898-1911) was associated during his remaining years with his son, E. T. Hutchings.
During his many years of practice Mr. Hutchings was actively engaged in the planning and supervision of a number of public and business structures in the state, noted examples of which were the Keisker Building and the Courier Journal Building at Louisville; Christ Church Cathedral House at Lexington; Woodford County Hospital, Versailles; Paignard Collegiate Institute, Whitesburg, and the Elks Building at Henderdon. In addition he designed many fine residences in Louisville, all prior to 1912, among which were homes of Col. C. C. Mengel, Charles T. Ballard and Isaac Starks. At the time of his decease Mr. Hutchings was preparing plans for a group of four buildings for the Y. W. C. A. at Louisville.
