This highly-illustrated volume completely revises and updates the second half of David Piper's "Catalogue of the Seventeenth Century Portraits in the National Portrait Gallery", published in 1963. Since that time, many portraits have been added to the collection. In addition, more recent academic research has resulted in a number of changes of identity and attribution. It has also facilitated more comprehensive surveys of each sitter's portraiture beyond the National Portrait Gallery. In presenting this research, the author John Ingamells offers new discoveries, insights and observations to create an invaluable historical resource.

John Ingamells was born on November 12, 1934 in Northampton, England, United Kingdom. He was a son of George H. Ingamells and Gladys L. Ingamells. He grew up in Sussex.
John Ingamells attended Hastings Grammar School (now Ark William Parker Academy) and Eastbourne Grammar School before going up to Fitzwilliam House (now Fitzwilliam College), Cambridge, in 1953.
His first job curatorial job was at York Art Gallery from 1959 to 1963, where John Ingamells was art assistant to the inspirational curator Hans Hess. During that time he did much of the work on a three volume catalogue of the pictures in York Art Gallery, a catalogue that has not been superseded. In 1963, he went to Cardiff as assistant keeper in the art department of the National Museum of Wales where he spent four years before returning to York as curator when Hans Hess left for Sussex University until 1977.
In 1977 Ingamells became assistant to Terence Hodgkinson, Director of the Wallace Collection, before succeeding him a year later. Because the Wallace Collection at that time neither lent works nor mounted exhibitions, Ingamells could devote his efforts to refurbishing the interiors, rehanging works and revising the museum’s catalogue (his four-volume survey remains a model of its type). He left this position in 1992.
From 1992 until 1997, he continued to be involved with the collection, serving on the Wallace Collection Memorial Executive Committee that oversees the operations of the British museum that was once owned by Sir Richard Wallace. Later, Brian Allen, director of the Mellon Foundation, in London, invited him to edit "A Dictionary of British Art and Irish Travellers in Italy, 1701-1800" (1997) from the Brinsley Ford archive.
He went on to edit the letters of Joshua Reynolds, revised and rewrote Alistair Smart’s book on Alan Ramsay and also wrote the text for two catalogues for the National Portrait Gallery.

1979John Ingamells had a reputation for being both high-minded (only in his last years did he read any contemporary novels) and unsociable in an art world, which loves a good party. He preferred the company of the few that knew him well, but among them he inspired great devotion.
Physical Characteristics: John Ingamells suffered from cancer at the end of his life.
In 1964 John Ingamells married Hazel Wilson. She died in 2012. They had two daughters, Annie and Claire.
