(Was his wife a wanton? White-hot fury seized Tom Tisdall...)
Was his wife a wanton? White-hot fury seized Tom Tisdall. He stood in the doorway, tense and shaking, staring at the scene before him. His wife Selina and Ben Price stood locked in an embrace, clinging--passionate...With an oath he lunged toward them--Never again would Selina make a fool of him! For one thought pounded in his tortured brain--MURDER! THE SALEM FRIGATE is the turbulent story of Doctor Tom Tisdall, who loved a woman he could never have--of Salina, beautiful and wicked--and of Ben Price, who repaid kindness with treachery. It is the story of the United States ship-of-the-line ESSEX, and of the men who sailed her under the guns of the Bashaw of Tripoli. Here is a tale of love and high adventure set in the rough recklass days of America's youth. From inside front cover: Escape--to Peril! The Arabs struck without warning. Knives flashing in the sun they fell savagely upon the guide. As Tom leapt to his feet to help Hamet, a staggering blow smashed into his back...The world began to spin...It tipped crazily and he felt his head about to explode. He grabbed for his knife--but as he did a second blow caught him and he felt himself falling--falling into a pool of nothingness as deep and black as a night in hell... *** Tom Tisdall had escaped from the dungeons of the Bashaw of Tripoli. But it was an escape to peril. The nomadic Arabs who served as his "escort" were born to treachery. Life was cheap to these primitive people--and the little gold Tom carried, a fortune. The easiest way to get it was to kill...

Taken from a book review found in the book (author of the review unknown): Suncock is the farthest frontier town of the Province of New Hampshire when Jamie Ferguson arrives, with his mother and sisters, fleeing from the disasters which the Stuart cause brought upon its followers in 1745. Against a vividly re-created pioneer background Mr. Jennings has laid like a scarlet thread the exciting story of Jame and his struggles against his fellow men, his wife, and the wilderness. "Next to Valour" presents a new picture of pioneer life in New Hampshire, during the French and Indian war, which is colorful and thrilling.
