He is the first lay president of the school, and in August 2014, became its longest-serving president DeGioia remains a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy. He also periodically teaches seminars for freshmen.
During his tenure as president, DeGioia has overseen the largest addition of campus facilities.
DeGioia serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of both Campus Compact and the Forum for the Future of Higher Education.

And as a commissioner on the Knight Commission for Intercollegiate Athletics. DeGioia represents the university at the World Economic Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations. DeGioia has several received honorary degrees, including: Sacred Heart University (2011), Queen's University Belfast (2009), Loyola University Maryland (2009), and Miami Dade College (2008). The Sons of Italy presented DeGioia with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia in 2004. In 2008, The Washingtonian named him a Washingtonian of the Year. He is also a member of the CuriosityStream Advisory Board.
