Career
Called to Scottish Bar, 1850. Political Secretary to Lord Advocate, 1852-1856. Called to English Bar, 1856.
Leader - writer on Daily News, Morning Star, London Review, and Pall Mall Gazette, 1860-1870. Served as volunteer in Italian war of 1866. Owing to bad health lived in island of Guernsey, 1870-1884.
Member of Parliament (R. (J.) E. Div. of Fife, 1885-1886. 1882-1905 farmed about 600 acres of his own land, applying the latest knowledge of chemistry and physiology with successful results, and giving to his workpeople an interest in the form of profit-sharing. He had no special recreations apart from the subjects above indicated. Of Kinlocli (late of Kinnear); landowner.
