(John Hunter was a pioneering Scottish surgeon whose 18th-...)
John Hunter was a pioneering Scottish surgeon whose 18th-century experiments and practices were ahead of his time in many ways. Hunterian literature crowds the shelves of medical libraries the world over. The Britannica devotes more space to Hunter than to Linneaus, Pare, Harvey, Jenner, Lister, Simpson, Pasteur, Freud, or Fleming. Yet outside the scientific community the name today strikes only a dim spark of recognition, if any at all. Although his practical contributions were legion, none had the kind of dramatic impact, the easily grasped significance, that excites the lay imagination. What Hunter accomplished transcended specific discovery and technical invention. He introduced a new spirit of inquiry, a philosophy, which not only transformed the medical theory and practice of his epoch, but profoundly influenced scientific thinking everywhere down to our own times.

(Queer characters. Eccentrics who work or play in the neth...)
Queer characters. Eccentrics who work or play in the nether realms that lie just beyond the prosaic core of everyday lives. Peoples whose eyes are occasionally lit by strange gleams. Gleams that seem to have humor, always to have mystery, and sometimes a touch of the macabre. This is the essences of this book.

( The public called him Scarface; the FBI called him Publ...)
The public called him Scarface; the FBI called him Public Enemy Number One; his associates called him Snorky. But Capone is the name most remember. And John Kobler's Capone is the definitive biography of this most brutal and flamboyant of the underground kings—an intimate and dramatic book that presents a complete view of Al Capone and his gaudy era. Here is Capone's story: his violent childhood in Brooklyn, his lieutenancy to Johnny Torrio, his rise in the ranks of the underworld, the notorious St. Valentine Massacre, his eventual control of the entire city of Chicago, and his decline during his imprisonment in Alcatraz. Capone was the ultimate gangster, and Capone is the ultimate in gangster biographies—a classic in the literature of crime.

(Gangsterism and violence were part of Capone's childhood....)
Gangsterism and violence were part of Capone's childhood. At an early age he showed his tough and criminal tendencies, became involved in murder investigations, and was generally known to be connected with organized crime. Here is a hypnotic, true story, skillfully narrated, with a gallery of players unpresedented in literature. It is filled with dramatic incidents that made headlines throughout the world. It is both a vast social document and a story more compelling than fiction. CAPONE is the ultimate true crime story masterfully presented

Ardent Spirit covers the full range of the temperance idea in America, beginning in the early seventeenth century and continuing through the prohibition years, 1919–1933. Using a wide variety of sources, Kobler quotes the amusing and often startling comments relating to the efforts of prohibitionists and lawmakers, so that the speakeasies, the rum-running, the bootleggers, and the gang wars all come vividly to life. Here too are portraits of eccentrics, instant millionaires, law enforcement officers, and murderers—all part of the Noble Experiment which proved to be one of the most tragicomic sagas in American history.
