Lake, John was born on June 11, 1870 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, United States. Son of Captain George Blocker and Rosa Florence (Jones) Lake.

Doctor of Laws, The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina., 1930. Student State Military College, class of 1891. Columbia Theological Seminary, 1891-1893, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, Kentucky), 1899-1902.

Pastor, school teacher and editor. Missionary to China, 1903-1935, missionary emeritus since 1939. Founder Tai-Kam Island Leper Hospital and Colony.

President John Lake, Inc., for more than 10 years, and until at his request, it was dissolved and work merged with Foreign Mission Board and S. China Convention Several missionary journeys around the world. Author of several volumes in verse. Has written several books and booklets on missionary work, in English and Chinese, edited and contributed to various journals in both langs.
