John wrote a criticism of art and photography for numerous periodicals during his career, including Camera Work, Century, and International Studio.
In 1909 his photographs were exhibited at Little Galleries and he helped hang the International Exhibition of Photography in New York. In that year he also edited Photographic Progress, a short-lived periodical out of Philadelphia, and a year later was a principal lecturer at the Buffalo Show.
In 1915 Laurvik served on the art commission for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, where he functioned as art director for the Palace of Fine Arts. He also wrote many literary translations from Danish.
