John Dague Lawyer was born on October 18, 1918, in Macomb, Illinois, to John Cleveland Lawyer and Bessie B. Dague. He spent part of his early life in Hammond, Indiana, and Evanston, Illinois, and later lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He married Arlette Ondine Carrijo Cord'homme on November 25, 1943; they had a daughter, Illène.
Lawyer studied at Pomona College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, and completed his legal education at the University of Chicago, receiving a Juris Doctor. In 1947, while undertaking graduate work in civil law at Tulane University in New Orleans, he received the University of Chicago law degree in absentia.
John Dague Lawyer was an American lawyer specializing in real property, oil and gas, and probate. He was admitted to the bar in 1947 and later registered for practice in Colorado, with his Colorado admission dated May 10, 1954. He worked in Carbondale, Colorado, in association with Retired Mun. J. and subsequently practiced as a retired lawyer. His Colorado attorney registration was later classified as inactive. His professional career extended across a period of more than six decades.
