He played competitively at Chester High School, then at Winchendon School (Winchendon, Massachusetts). He played guard for Providence College from 1997 to 2002. The 5"9", 165 pounds He holds the assists in a single-game record in Euroleague.
In the 3rd November he delivered 15 assists.
As a senior in 2001-2002, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.5 steals, finishing second in the nation in steals. Linehan was not drafted into the National Basketball Association (National Basketball Association).
He played for the Greenville Groove of the then-National Basketball Development League (NBDL). After the College of Business Administration championship Linehan moved to Europe and signed with Paris Basket Racing of the LNB in France, where he also played two years (2006-2008) for SLUC Nancy.
In 2008-2009 he played for British Columbia Kalev/Cramo, in Estonia.
In July 2009 he signed a one-year contract with French Pro A team Cholet Basket.
He led the Big East Conference in steals three different seasons, earning the Big East Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-Big East honors his last two seasons. As a result, he was awarded the Henry Iba Corinthian Award that season.
