Linton was born on December 8, 1959 in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, South Korea; the son of Hugh KcKentire Linton and Betty Lois (Flowers) Linton.

Linton was born on December 8, 1959 in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, South Korea; the son of Hugh KcKentire Linton and Betty Lois (Flowers) Linton.
Linton received a Doctor of Medicine from Yonsei University College of Medicine in 1987. Twenty three years later he earned his Master of Science degree in physiology from Korean University Graduate School of Medicine. In 2003, John was given a Ph.D. in physiology from the same school.
Linton began his career as a pediatric resident at Flushing Hospital in 1987. A year later he took a position of a family medicine resident at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn & Queens. Since 1991 John has been a director at Yonsei University Severance Hospital International Health Care Center.
Since 2008 he has served as a concurrent professor of Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Also since 2008 Linton has been working as an advisor at Korea International Cooperation Agency. Since 2010 he has served as a chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Yonsei University College of Medicine. Since 2015 John has been working as a president of Korea Foundation for International Healthcare.
John Linton contributed to the development of the ambulance customized for Korea in 1992. His ambulance was remodeled to suit Korean geography. It is known to be the basis of the fire ambulance used today. He became the first special naturalized Korean citizen in 2012.
Linton also established the Eugene Bell Foundation in the U.S. in 1995 with his brother Stephen Linton and other descendants of Bell. The foundation aims to give humanitarian aid to North Korea.
Linton received the Commendation from the Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs. Also he received the award from National Human Rights Commission of Korea in 2014 and from Korean National Tuberculosis Association in 2013.
Linton is a board member of Chollipo Arboretum, International Tuberculosis Research Center, Korea International Cooperation Agency and Seonam University. Also, he is a member of the board of directors of Independence Hall of Korea, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, LG Welfare Foundation and Soonchun Tuberculosis Rehabilitation Center.
John Linton is married to Jina Lee Linton. They have three children.
