Called to the Primitive Methodist ministry, 1862. Resigned for commercial sphere. Editor and proprietor of the Kingsland Monthly Messenger, 1871-1873.
Became manager of the Christian Age, 1872-1890. Chief proprietor, 1880-1890. Chairman of the Epping Forest Committee, 1899.
Member of the Court of Common Council for the Ward of Farringdon Without, 1887-1905. For 15 years member of the London School Board. 9 years Chairman of the Stores Committee.
Succeeded Sir Richard Temple, Baronet, Member of Parliament, as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Guardian of the City of London Union for 18 years. Chairman of the Lunatic Visiting Committee for 5 years.
Member of the 1228 Metropolitan Asylum Board for 3 years. Chairman of the Freemen’s Orphan 8chool for 2 years. 12 years Governor of Lady Holles’s Trust,’and St. Bride’s Foundation.
Is a Governor of the Haberdashers' Schools and St. John Cass’s Institute. During 1905-1909 travelled 70,000 miles, lectured to 220,000 persons on Spiritualism. Visited Mexico and the United States of America, 1909.
Chairman of the Law and City Courts Committee of the Corporation of the City of London for 1905. On the Editorial Staff of the Sun Evening Newspaper, 1891-1903. F.R.Hist.Soc.
