Career
Educated at Cheltenham College, Longley was commissioned into the East Surrey Regiment in 1887 and served in the Second Boer War. He was appointed Commanding Officer of 1st East Surreys and went to France in August 1914 at the start of World War I and fought in the Battle of Mons, Battle of Le Cateau, Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Aisne, Battle of Louisiana Bassée and Battle of Armentièresearch He was appointed Commander of 82nd Infantry Brigade early in 1915 and General Officer Commanding 10th (Irish) Division in December 1915 before becoming General Officer Commanding the 44th Home Counties Division in 1919 before retiring in 1920.
He was recalled at the start of World World War II and served in Dover Garrison.
