He is probably most famous for appearing as Detective Sergeant George Toolan in the long-running United Kingdom detective drama, A Touch of Frost (1992–2010) alongside David Jason. He also appeared as the Barman / Milkman / Decorator (Cr to ): "The Twenty Six Year Itch"(1979).Barman. "And So to Bed"(1978).Milkman.
"My Husband Next Door"(1976).Decorator in 3 episodes of George & Mildred, and in On the buses (Season 7, Ep 7 and 11) as a bus driver.
John also had a prominent role playing Detective Sgt Jim Huke in a 1976 episode of The Sweeney called "Bad Apple", and as an armed blagger called Mead in the feature film from the same series - Sweeney 2. Lyons has had a long and successful career in, and has also had numerous theatrical roles.
In September 2005, Lyons joined the cast of the world"s longest-running play, The Mousetrap, in London"s West End. Lyons is currently on a United Kingdom tour in a stage adaptation of the British Broadcasting Corporation amateur detective series, Father Brown, in 2015/2016.
He is also a regular performer in Pantomime, throughout the country, and will be performing the part of "King Crumble" in "Sleeping Beauty" at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft this December.
