(This book presents the recollections of the travels made ...)
This book presents the recollections of the travels made by John MacGregor in Sarawak, Siam, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaya and Burma in 1895. It is a lively account by a medical doctor with a wide scope of interests, from contemporary political issues to the customs and the traditions of native peoples. The well-read author is on the look-out for the peculiar things one often finds in travelogs, in order to verify and to savor. The account excels in its colorful and often witty descriptions of encounters and events on the road to Singapore, Kuching, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Saigon, Malacca and Mandalay. It presents an accurate and lively picture of the people and the countries on the eve of rapid development.

(Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary...)
Mark Twain once famously said "there was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering, and that was the fact that it is past and can't be restored." Well, over recent years, The British Library, working with Microsoft has embarked on an ambitious programme to digitise its collection of 19th century books. There are now 65,000 titles available (that's an incredible 25 million pages) of material ranging from works by famous names such as Dickens, Trollope and Hardy as well as many forgotten literary gems , all of which can now be printed on demand and purchased right here on Amazon. Further information on The British Library and its digitisation programme can be found on The British Library website.

(Buffer State are being amicably settled between Great Bri...)
Buffer State are being amicably settled between Great Britain and France. And as the French have had it all their own way, it is to be hoped they will generously release the poor patriot, Phra Yott, who was sentenced, when I was travelling through the country, to twenty years of penal servitude for the fearful crime of defending his native land, and whose name is mentioned more than once in the following pages. Far be it from the purpose of this volume to suspect the prophetic foresight of the powers that be in coming to this agreement with France, but there is no doubt it has taken people of all political opinions by great surprise. We have handed over to France the British province of MONGSIN, formerly belonging to Upper Burmah, and are withdrawing our outposts there. We have also agreed to France wresting from Siam the provinces of ANGKOR and BATTAMBONG, through both of which I travelled about the time of the Franco-S iamese crisis, and which are two of the most important provinces throughout all Siam. It is in the Province of Angkor that the wonderful but little known ruins of A ngkor-W at are situated; and they are described in detail in this volume.
