John Malmstad was born on June 25, 1941, in Bismarck, North Dakota. He is the son of Manley Ellsworth and Joyce Evelyn Malmstad.
John Malmstad studied at Northwestern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with summa cum laude in 1963. Besides, he attended Princeton University and received there a Master of Arts in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969. Malmstad also graduated from Harvard University and got there a Master of Arts with honors in 1985.
John Malmstad started his career at Columbia University. He held there the position of an instructor in 1968-1969, assistant professor in 1969-1973, associate professor in 1973-1979, and a professor of Russian literature in 1979-1985. Then Malmstad joined Harvard University. He served as a Samuel Hazzard Cross Professor of Slavic languages and literature since 1985. Malmstad also was an associate dean in 1993-1994. Additionally, Malmstad worked as a visiting associate professor at Stanford University in 1971 and the University of California in 1977-1978.
Besides, John Malmstad is a writer. He was a Russian book-review editor for Slavic Review in 1975-1986, associate editor of Russian Review in 1986-1988, and a contributor to professional journals.
