John F. Manopoli is an American lawyer with a practice in technology licensing and intellectual property. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1967 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1987, the year he was admitted to the Massachusetts bar. He has served as senior corporate counsel at Lotus Development Corporation.
Background
The earliest documented stage of John F. Manopoli's life is his undergraduate study at Dartmouth College, a private coeducational institution in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he was part of the Class of 1967. Dartmouth had been chartered in 1769 for the instruction of Native youth as well as English students, and it admitted only men until 1972.
After graduation he pursued legal education at the University of Connecticut School of Law, which has operated in Hartford, Connecticut, since 1921.
Education
Manopoli earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1967. Founded by Eleazar Wheelock, Dartmouth was one of the nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution, and King George III granted its royal charter in 1769. During Manopoli's years there, it remained a men's college, becoming coeducational only in 1972.
He completed a Juris Doctor at the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1987. The school began in 1921 as the Hartford College of Law, founded by George William Lillard and Caroline Eiermann Lillard as a practical school with practical goals, and the American Bar Association accredited it in 1933. The University of Connecticut took full title in 1948, and by 1984 the law school had moved to the former Hartford Seminary campus on Elizabeth Street.
His admission to the Massachusetts bar followed in 1987, the year he received his law degree.
Career
Manopoli was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1987, the year he completed his law degree in Connecticut. He also worked as a partner in a law practice. His later legal career centered on corporate work, most notably as senior corporate counsel at Lotus Development Corporation, a software company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Lotus was founded in 1982 by Mitch Kapor and Jonathan Sachs, and its best-known early product, the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, was released for the IBM PC in January 1983. By the late 1980s the company had become one of the largest independent software companies in the world. IBM acquired Lotus in 1995 for about $3.5 billion, principally to obtain Lotus Notes and its groupware capabilities.
His practice has included technology licensing, intellectual property law other than patents, and acquisitions and divestitures.
