Was captured by brigands in Asia Minor in October 1890, who demanded a ransom of £16,000. Was released by Turkish troops. Entered army, 1883; Captain, 1890.
Major, 1904; Lieutenant-Colonel, 1909. Served South Africa, 1900-2 (despatches twice, Queen’s medal, 3 clasps, King’s medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Specially employed on the Military Survey and Reconnaissance of Namaqualand and Bushmanland, 1907. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; the Norfolk Regiment; an authority on Big Game.
Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Fellow of the Zoological Society.
