John Marshall Martin was a prominent Confederate politician. He was also a planter and railroad promoter.

Background

John Marshall Martin was born on March 18, 1832, in Edgefield District, South Carolina, United States. He was the son of Edmund Howard Martin and Mary Anne Maner. Little is known about his early life.

Education

John Marshall Martin graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1852.

Career

John Marshall Martin moved to Ocala, Florida, from Edgefield in 1856. Before the war, he was a planter.

During the Civil War, he organized the Marion Light Infantry in Florida, of which he was captain in 1861. He also was elected to the first Confederate House of Representatives from the First District of Florida.

Martin served on the Naval Affairs Committee and the special committee for the relief of sick soldiers. At the end of his term in the House, he refused reelection and returned to the field. In the spring of 1864, Martin was colonel of the 9th Florida Regiment.

He saw service in the Army of Tennessee during the Nashville campaign in late 1864. When the war ended, he returned to his Ocala plantation. He was also part of a company that wanted to construct an electric railroad.

Achievements

  • John Marshall Martin served in the Confederate Army and represented the state in the First Confederate Congress, replacing James Baird Dawkins. He was the last survivor of the Confederate Congress.

Politics

John Marshall Martin was active in local Democratic party politics, and he supported the secession of Florida.
