Mcclellan, John was born on April 11, 1847 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Son of Colonel John and Jane Josephine (Walker) M.


Educated private schools, St. Paul, Detroit, and in Germany. Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1867. Graduate Artillery School, 1888.


1 son, John Halstead. Appointed Second lieutenant 5th United States Artillery, June 17, 1867. First lieutenant, January 5, 1870.

Captain, October 25, 1894. Major chief ordnance officer vols., July 18, 1898. Honorary discharged from volunteer service, May 12, 1899.

Major, United States Artillery Corps, February 28, 1901. Lieutenant colonel, August 11, 1903. Colonel, March 16, 1906.

Brigadier general, June 1, 1906. Retired at own request, over 40 years’ service, June 9, 1906.


Served as officer of weather bureau of War Department, 1875-1881.
