John McEwen was an Australian politician who served as the 18th Prime Minister of Australia. He served as prime minister from December 19, 1967, to January 10, 1968, the period between the death of Prime Minister Harold Holt and the taking of office of Prime Minister John Gorton.

Background

John McEwen was born in Chiltern, Australia on Marср 29, 1900.

Career

In 1934 he was elected to the federal House of Representatives. He became minister for the interior in the Australian Party-Country Party coalition government in 1937, minister for external affairs in 1939, and minister for air in 1940. McEwen became a prominent Opposition leader during the period of Labor Party rule from 1941 to 1949. In the subsequent Liberal-Country Party coalition governments he served as minister of commerce and agriculture from 1949 to 1956, trade from 1956 to 1971, and of industry from 1964 to 1971. He became Country Party leader in 1958. He served as deputy prime minister from 1958 to 1967 and from 1968 until his retirement in 1971.
