John Miller was born in London in 1931, and spent most of his adult life in Penzance.
Miller began his career in church architecture, but soon moved to a different form of art. Many of his paintings reflect his travels abroad to places as far afield as Venice and Goa. John Miller’s paintings were also influenced by his deep spiritual beliefs. He lived in West Cornwall with partner Michael Truscott from the late nineteen fifties until his death in 2002.
In 1989, John published an autobiography, “Leave Tomorrow Behind”. Several other books have also been published about this artist. He died in 2002. John Miller’s work is currently (2004-5) the subject of academic investigation by a postgraduate student at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England. John Miller's works are currently (2009) viewable and sold at New Craftsman gallery in St.Ives.
John's work as a contemporary landscape artist is known particularly for the blues and yellows of sky, sand and sea, and has become popular in the form of posters, cards and even CD covers. His posters have even appeared on film and television sets. Much of his inspiration was drawn from the Cornish scenery.
John Miller, a household name in Cornwall since the mid-1970s, is an artist whose work continues to have an extremely high public profile, both in the UK and internationally. In a 2003 survey (for the periodical 'Art Business Today') of 200 United Kingdom high street gallery owners whose businesses specialised in posters and popular art reproductions, Miller was listed alongside Monet and L.S. Lowry among the ‘top-four’ best-selling landscape artists and fifth - above Van Gogh (7th), Picasso (8th), and Matisse (10th) - in a list of the current ‘top-ten’ best-selling deceased artists in all genres.
