While information as to Mr. Notman's early life and education is lacking he is known to have attained a reputation in the field of ecclesiastical work and during the middle years of the last century designed many noteworthy churches in Philadelphia. Among these should be mentioned St. Mark's on Locust Street west of 16th, 1847-49, a Gothic structure; St. Clement's, Cherry street at 20th, 1859, and Church of the Holy Trinity in Rittenhouse Square, designed in the Gothic style, and opened for worship in 1859.
Also ascribed to Mr. Notman is the church of St. James-the-less, at the Falls of the Schuylkill, Pa., a distinguished reproduction of the small church of St Michael in Long Staunton, England; St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, of Gothic design; the historic Immanuel Church at Newcastle, Delaware; and the Episcopal Church of St. Thomas (Gothic) in Glassboro, N. J.
One of the founders of the Pennsylvania Institute of Architects in 1861 at Philadelphia Chapter, A. I. A. incorporated in 1869.
