John D. Palmer was born on May 26, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is a son of John D. Palmer and Florence (Eley) Palmer.
John received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lake Forest College in 1957. Later, in 1959, he got a Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University. Two years later, in 1961, Palmer received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
Between 1953-1955, John served in the United States Army. During the period from 1961 till 1963, he held a post of an instructor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Later, John was promoted to the position of an assistant professor at the same educational establishment.
From 1963 till 1964, Palmer was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bristol. In 1964, he was appointed a professor of biology and department head at the New York University in New York City, the posts he held till 1974, when John was appointed a professor of biology and department head at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
During his lifetime, Palmer acted as a member of Marine Biological Laboratory. Also, he was a member of editorial board of "Chronobiology International" and "Marine Behavior and Physiology" (present-day "Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology") journals.

1970John is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Explorers Club. Also, he is an ex-president of Sigma Xi.
John married Carla Bianchi on September 15, 1960. Their marriage produced one child — John Charles.
