Began as attache, Austro-Hungarian Consulate, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1908, Chicago, 1909, appointed vice consul, 1909. Transferred to Cleveland, 1911, appointed consul, 1916. Consul Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office, 1917-1920.

Counselor of legation, 2d class, 1920, 1st class, 1929.

Counselor of Hungarian legation, Washington, District of Columbia, 1922-1930. Permanent delegate of Hungary to League of Nations and to International Labor Organisation, with rank of minister resident, 1930, Envoy Extraordinary anu Minister Plenipotentiary, 1932.

Delegate to Disarmament Conference, and to other conferences called by League of Nations, 1930-1933. Envoy Extraordinary anu Minister Plenipotentiary, United States, 1933-1940, accredited also to Cuba and Mexico, 1934-1940, resigned November, 1940.

Lecturer, Dartmouth College, 1941, professor political science, from 1942.
