John PENNYCUICK, British Chief Engineer. Received the Telford medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers; (mentioned in despatches and medal).

Studied at Cheltenham College. H.E.I. Company’s Military College, Addiscombe.
Career
Fellow of the University of Madras. Received the Telford medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Lieutenant R.E. 1858.
Colonel 1887; Abyssinian Campaign 1867. (mentioned in despatches and medal). Thirtyfour years in Public Works Department, Madras, of which was the head for 54 years.
Also some time member of the Legislative Council, Madras. President of the Sanitary Board, and of the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Madras. Chief Engineer and Secretary to Government in the Marine and Public Works Department.
Employed by Government of Queensland to advise upon the prevention of damage from floods in the Brisbane River, 1899. President Royal Indian Engineering College, Cooper’s Hill, to 1899. RecrecdioTis: cricket and racquets.
Has for many years been an enthusiastic supporter of cricket, and has contributed largely to the development of the game in India, which has been so great of late years. R.E. (retired 1896).
