Pienaar"s parents, Eric and Johanna Pienaar, were both born in the Netherlands. Pienaar began his journalistic career at South London Press, before becoming an Old Bailey correspondent and then writing an angling column, even though he himself was never an angler. In the early 1990s, he was working as a political correspondent for The Guardian in the Press Gallery of the House of Commons.
