John Powell, American pianist, composer. Member American Institute Arts and Letters, American Society Composers.

Background

Powell, John was born on September 6, 1882 in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Son of John H. and Rebecca (Leigh) Powell.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, University of Virginia, 1901. Studied music with sister, Mistress J. S. Brockenbrough, piano and harmony with F. C. Hahr, of Richmond, Virginia, piano with Leschetizky, Vienna, and composition with Nawratil, Vienna.

Career

Made debut, Berlin, December 1907, and later appeared in Vienna, Paris and London, followed by series of 12 recitals. Has concertized in leading cities of Europe and America. Soloist on New York Symphony European tour, 1920.

Toured in Great Britain and Europe, 1928.

    • Composer numerous orchestral works, choral settings, hymns, etc. Latest composition: Symphony on Virginian folk themes and in the folk modes (premier, Detroit, 1947). November 5 declared John Powell Day by Governor Battle of Virginia Symphony premiered in Richmond, Virginia on that day, 1951.
