In the present-day world, English is the major international language. In Medieval Europe, Latin dominated the scene; it was the commonly shared language, right through to the seventeenth century. From then on, French took over, giving way eventually to English with the establishment of the British Empire. English has spread far and wide in the world; it is now estimated to be spoken by some five hundred million people, three hundred million of whom are non-native speakers. In this collection of papers by eminent scholars, editor John B. Pride brings together a wealth of information on non-mother-tongue Englishes. The basic characteristics of the new Englishes are analyzed, both with regard to their descriptive linguistic features and with regard to their main users and uses, and the major issues related to English as an intra-national and international language are examined.
