John Reuter was born on February 26, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
John Reuter received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the State University of New York at Geneseo (1975), and a Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art & Photography from the University of Iowa, Iowa City (1976, 1978). It was there that he began to specialize in Polaroid materials, most notably his SX-70 constructions, combining photography with painting and collage.
In the 1980s, John Reuter was a technical specialist and photographer for the Polaroid Corpo¬ration in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and taught photography at the University of Iowa in 1976-1978. John Reuter directed "Refocus," the University's Photography Festival, in 1977, and was its photography programmer in 1976. From 1973 to 1975 the photographer was a technical assistant at SUNY, Geneseo, in Audio Visual Resources.
John Reuter is currently a part-time faculty member at the University of Hartford in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Hartford Art School. He teaches courses in analog and digital photography as well as cinema studies.
John Reuter belongs to the Photographic Resource Center and Polaroid Collection Committee.
