(People have always been fascinated by secret societies - ...)
People have always been fascinated by secret societies - and never more so than today, when our post-Da Vinci Code imaginations are newly fired up by conspiracy theories and clandestine plots for world domination. But what is the truth about these covert groups? Renowned historian J. M. Roberts brings us an engrossing history of some of the most famous of these fraternities. Critically acclaimed on its original publication, this perennially classic work has been refreshed for the modern market and its widespread interest in the role of such groups as the Freemasons.

(Over the centuries, two important beliefs arose in Europe...)
Over the centuries, two important beliefs arose in Europe: a faith that man could order his own destiny, and the idea that progress was normal. But by 1900, doubts had arisen concerning traditional Western values. The continuing problems of world poverty, environmental deterioration, the inequality of women, and continued warfare pose real questions about the advancement of the human race. The Triumph of the West is noted historian J. M. Roberts' engrossing, well-reasoned, in-depth essay on the nature of the dominance of Western civilization and its ambiguous "triumph." Roberts' interest is not in judging the West's push toward greater cultural preeminence but in gaining a better understanding of the present by analyzing what got us here and, possibly, indulging in a bit of cautious optimism.

(How is it that the small continent of Europe, with its ri...)
How is it that the small continent of Europe, with its rich multiplicity of cultures and traditions, has managed to exert so profound an influence on the rest of the world? Roberts's sweeping and entertaining history notes the paradoxical effect, for good and ill, on everything touched by those Western values that originated in Europe. Beginning with its Paleolithic origins and the early civilizations of the Aegean, Roberts traces the development of the European identity over the course of thousands of years, ranging across empires and religions, economics, science, and the arts. Antiquity, the age of Christendom, the Middle Ages, early modern history, and the old European order are all surveyed in turn, with particular emphasis given to the turbulent 20th century.

John Morris Roberts was born on April 14, 1928, in Bath, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Edward Henry Roberts and Dorothy Julia Hallett.
John Roberts was educated at Taunton School. He went to Keble College, Oxford, in 1946, graduating with first-class honors in modern history. After national service (1949-1951), he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Magdalen College, Oxford.
From 1953 to 1954, John M. Roberts was a Commonwealth Fund fellow at Princeton and Yale universities. From 1953 to 1979 he was fellow and tutor in Modern History at Merton College, where he introduced generations of young historians not only to the history of Europe but to the history of America, India, China, and Japan which at that stage featured much less than today on the syllabus. He also served twice as an acting warden, from 1969 to 1970 and from 1977 to 1979, was proctor from 1967 to 1968, and was warden from 1984 to 1994, and an honorary fellow from 1994 to 2003.
In addition, from 1979 to 1985 Roberts was vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton. As an administrator he helped expand the curriculum and broke down barriers; for example, he created a management-studies program at Merton, made the college a co-ed institution in 1980, and worked to improve the graduate-studies program.
Over the years, Roberts served as editor of the prestigious English Historical Review, governor of the BBC, and trustee of Britain's National Portrait Gallery. He also served as general editor of a two-book series for Oxford University Press, the New Oxford History of England, and the Short Oxford History of the Modern World.
Roberts wrote a number of influential history books, among them Europe, 1880-1945 (1967; third edition, 2001), History of the World (1976; third edition, 1997); The Triumph of the West (1985), A History of Europe (1997), and The Twentieth Century: The History of the World, 1901-2000 (1999). In addition, he was the editor of the prestigious English Historical Review from 1967 to 1977.
