Member United States House of Representatives (Republican) from Kentucky, 10th Congress, 1807-1809, obtained passage of resolutions to investigate alleged Spanish intrigues of the United States Judge Harry Innes of Kentucky. Member Kentucky House of Representatives from Nelson County, 1813-1817, from Jefferson County, 1822-1824. Member United States Senate from Kentucky, 1825-1831, took part in Webster-Hayne debate.

Member of commission to adjust claims against Mexico, 1839.
