John J. (Jack) Schmidt is emeritus professor of counseling at East Carolina University (ECU). Named Distinguished Professor for the ECU College of Education in 1999, Dr. Schmidt was a teacher, counselor, school system director of counseling services, state coordinator of school counseling services, and university professor for over 40 years. An active writer, he has authored or co-authored nearly 20 titles.
Education
Dr. Schmidt received his B.A. in sociology in 1968 and an MAT in 1970 from St. Michael's College in Colchester Park, VT. He completed a doctorate in counseling from UNC-Greensboro in 1980.
Career
John (Jack) Schmidt began his career in Vermont as a middle school social studies teacher in 1968 and in 1971 became a counselor at another middle school. in 1973, Jack and his family moved to North Carolina where he continued counseling at a primary school and began his doctoral studies at UNC-Greensboro. After completing his doctorate, he moved to a high school in Greensboro and later became coordinator of counseling and testing for the school system in Gaston County, NC. In 1985, Dr. Schmidt became Coordinator of School Counseling for the state of North Carolina. In 1989, he accepted a professorship at East Carolina University where he also became chair of the department. He retired from the university in 2006 and for several years continued writing, speaking, and teaching as an adjunct professor for other universities.

Jack Schmidt has been married to his wife, Patricia, for over 50 years. They have one daughter who is married and has four children.
