He was Alderman for Candlewick ward from 1889 to 1902. He was appointed Sheriff of the City of London for 1894 and elected Lord Mayor of London for 1898. In 1894 he served as Deputy Lieutenant for Kent and was knighted the same year.
He died 11 February 1904.
Their sons took over the business.

He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1859 (his membership was proposed by Joseph Toynbee, Edwin Lankester, Francis Sibson, Richard Owen and Richard Partridge among others) and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1902.
