It was originally published in the "Dramatie Review" for January 23, 1886, and has been reprinted in his collected Poems. The letters referred to were those written by Keats to Fanny Brawne, which were sold at Sotheby's March 2, 1885. Wilde was present throughout the sale. 212. LES BALLONS. Holograph Manuscript of his Poem "Les Ballons." Four stanzas of four lines each, written on one page 4to. With a photograph. Mounted with guard and bound in full olive levant morocco, gilt fillet panels on back and sides, gilt edges, doublures and flys of pale green moire silk, facsimile signature of Wilde on front cover, by Wood. This Manuscript Poem varies from the poem as printed in the "Lady's Pictorial" Christmas Number, 1887, and first reprinted in Methuen's collected Edition in 1908. The Poem begins in the manuscript with "Against the shifting agate skies," whereas in the printed text the line reads "Against these turbid turquoise skies." John was born on May 5, 1830 at Orange, New Jersey, United States, one of the twelve children of Stephen and Susan (Batterson) Stetson, who were both of New England descent. His father and several of his brothers were hatters, having acquired the trade in Connecticut, their native state.
He studied for a while in a school, but left it that he might serve an early apprenticeship to the trade.
In 1865 Stetson opened a one-man hat factory in Philadelphia. The hats, made by hand, he peddled among the local retailers. During the first six months he never sold as many as a dozen hats in a single order. Concluding that his product lacked distinction of style, he proceeded to make his own models instead of slavishly following the prescribed fashions of the period.
Continuing as salesman-producer, he took and filled orders for larger and larger quantities until his fame as a hatter began to spread beyond the city.
Besides renewing his health and strength, Stetson's journey to the Rocky Mountains had extended his knowledge of Americans and their ways.
Having noted with interest the head gear then in vogue in the West, he was able to supply a type of hat that quickly became popular there. To build up his business he relied not on advertising, but wholly on the quality of his goods. The hats, he felt, must advertise themselves; in looks and wear they must appeal to buyers. With the increase in sales, Stetson never departed from the fixed-price policy with which he started.
As the demand for his product grew his manufacturing facilities kept pace; machinery was introduced, and gradually a great industrial plant was organized on the outskirts of Philadelphia, later to be surrounded by the growing city.
An apprentice system with bonus was early established, to be followed in later years by annual gift distributions at Christmas, bonus awards for continuous services, stock allotments to employees, a homebuilding association, savings and benefit funds, and other welfare features.
An auditorium was built primarily for Sunday-school purposes. A hospital with a capacity of 20, 000 patients a year, served by a large permanent staff, was erected. The company was opposed to organized labor, and these paternalistic activities brought against it the charge of "benevolent feudalism" and the destruction of "the spirit of independence and liberty".
He died of apoplexy at his DeLand home, leaving his entire estate, of approximately $5, 000, 000, to his family.
John Batterson Stetson founded the John B. Stetson Company as a manufacturer of headwear; the company's hats are now commonly referred to simply as Stetsons. He employed 3500 hands and turned out 2, 000, 000 hats a year, which were distributed throughout the civilized world. Besides, Stetson co-founded Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, in 1878. In 1900, Stetson University founded the first law school in Florida: Stetson University Law School.

Stetson was a generous giver to Baptist churches and benevolences.
John proved an apt worker, but after reaching his majority his business prospects as a junior partner in the family firm did not seem alluring and he decided to strike out for himself. Ill health, however, compelled him to quit work for a time and in an effort to recuperate he went to Illinois, Missouri, and later, during the gold-seeking period of the sixties, to Colorado. Outdoor life on the plains and in the foothills restored his health, and he returned to the East robust and energetic.
He was twice married; by his first wife he had a daughter, and by his second, Sarah Elizabeth Shindler, two sons.
