The member of an ancient Cornwall family, he was the eldest surviving son of Sir George Trevelyan, 1st Baronet of Nettlecombe, Somerset, who he succeeded in 1671.

He sat for Minehead from 1708 to 1717 and 1717 to 1722. He died in September 1755, aged 85, having held the baronetcy for 84 years. He was succeeded by George Trevelyan, 3rd Baronet.

Trevelyan sat as Member of Parliament for Somerset from 1695 to 1698 and in 1701 and was appointed High Sheriff of Somerset for 1704-1705.
