He was the eldest son son of Richard Twining (1749–1824), a director of the East India Company, and the head of Twinings the London tea merchants.

Twining was born in 1770, the eldest son of Richard Twining (1749–1824). In 1825, he founded Twinings Bank, the family having banked with Hoare"s Bank of Fleet Street since 1725. The business eventually merged with Lloyds Bank in 1892.
Twining died in 1855.
