John Vardill, American clergyman, spy.


Vardill, John was born in 1749 in New York City. Son of Thomas and Hannah (Tiebout) Vardill.


Graduate King’s College (now Columbia), 1766, Master of Arts, 1769. Master of Arts (honorary), Oxford (England) University, 1774.


Anatomy King’s College, 1766-1773, appointed fellow and professor natural law, 1773. Wrote articles opposing Non-Importation Agreement. Ordained deacon and priest Church of England, London, 1774.

Elected assistant minister Trinity Church, New York City, also Regius professor divinity King’s College, 1774, but never returned to American. Spied on Americans and American sympathizers in England, 1775-1781, stole entire correspondence between American commissioner and French Court, March-October 1777 (verified suspicions that France would intervene on side of Americans).
