Was employed at Newton Chambers Company’s Thorncliffe pit until the great lockout, 1869. Worked at 2075 Wombwell Main Colliery, Wombwell, during the period of the Thornelifte dispute. Obtained employment at the Wliarncliffe Silkstone Colliery, Tankersley, near Barnsley, as a coal miner, 1870.
Elected by the Wliarncliffe Silkstone miners as their checkweighman, 1883-1904.
Was Secretary, President, and Delegate for the Wliarncliffe Silkstone Branch of the Yorkshire Miners’ Association for twenty years. Vice-President of the Yorkshire Miners’ Association for fifteen years.
