Educated public schools. Doctor of Laws, Howard University, Ursinus College, University of Pennsylvania.
Errand-boy in book-store at 14. Went to Indiana, but returned, 1856. Retail clothing salesman, 1856-1858.
Established, 1861, with Nathan Brown, clothing house of Wanamaker & Brown, Philadelphia.
Established, 1876, department store in Philadelphia, and a similar business in New York in 1896 (successor of A. T. Stewart). Was an organizer, and director Merchants Bank.
Active in politics as Republican of independent proclivities and an opponent of the “machine” in politics. Declined Republican nomination for 48th Congress, also independent candidacy for mayor, Philadelphia, 1886.
Presidential elector, 1888.
Member Republican National Executive Committee, 1889-1893. Postmaster General of the United States, 1889-1893, in cabinet of President Harrison. Long active in religious work.
Founded, 1858, and from then superintendent Bethany South.S. (Presbyterian), probably the largest in the United States.
Elected 1st salaried secretary in America of Young Men's Christian Association, 1858. One of founders Christian Commission during Civil War.
President Young Men's Christian Association of Philadelphia, 1870-1883. Member board finance Centennial Exposition, 1876.
Helped found Presbyterian Hospital, of which was trustee, and with Mistress Wanamaker built the children's ward.
Manager University Hospital some years. Founded Wanamaker Institute of Industries, Bethany Dispensary, and First Penny Savings Bank of which became president He erected Young Men's Christian Association and college buildings in India, China, Japan, of Korea and many churches and other institutions
Received decoration officer Legion of Honor, French Government, 1912.
