Went to Glasgow and entered an exporting house as apprentice, 1833. Sailed for Sydney in ship “ Portland” with emigrants, 1838. Made two trips overland from Sydney to Adelaide, 1839-1840.
Sailed for New Zealand, 1841. Was through Heke’s war with those who took up arms in favour of Queen as against Ileke, 1845. To California as supercargo, 1850.
On a cruise to islands in the Pacific in the schooner “Wanderer,” Royal Yacht Squadron, owned by Benjamin Boyd (Boyd killed, Solomon Islands), 1851. Went to the goldfields of New South Wales and Victoria, 1853. To London, 1854; showed his sketches of cruise in “ Wanderer” to Queen Victoria and returned to New Zealand, 1855.
Has entertained to date twelve of the Governors of New Zealand. Retired timber merchant.
