He was educated at Abbotsholme School and then at Trinity College, Cambridge before going onto Guy"s Hospital. He studied surgery but was wounded during the Second World War which left him unable to stand for long periods of time and therefore unable to practice surgery.
He was a noted British physician, whose death was commemorated with a long obituary in The Daily Telegraph. His area of specialisation was geriatric medicine and improving conditions for elderly patients
He switched to general medicine initially specialising in cardiology before becoming interesting in geriatric and disability medicine. In 1987 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his work.
