He was born on 28 January 1884 and educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Street James, Milton, Portsmouth.

After service as a World War I chaplain he was then Vicar of Street John's, Waterloo Road, Lambeth and after that Street George’s, Newcastle upon Tyne. From 1942 to 1945 he was Rural Dean of Huddersfield and finally Bishop of Thetford (also Archdeacon of Lynn from 1946 to 1953). He died after a short retirement on 13 March 1955.
