Studied at Paisley Grammar School. Studied and practised estate management and agriculture.
Entered service of Glasgow Corporation, 1875. Was first General Manager and organiser of Glasgow Corporation Tramways as a municipal undertaking, firstly under horse traction, and later under electric traction. Following upon this pioneer work was called upon to advise many of the largest Corporations in Kingdom, and to assist them in obtaining Parliamentary powers to municipalise and operate their tramways.
Was first President of Municipal Tramways Association of Great Britain.
Late Assistant to Chairman of Underground Electric Railways Company of London, Limited, and General Manager of the Metropolitan District Railway. Now a Director of the District Railway.
