Preached in Confederate Army camps during Civil War. Correspondent secretary Baptist Sunday-School Board, 1862-1864.
Aide-de-camp to governor North Carolina, 1865. Made trip to Europe, 1870.

Began revival of Theological Seminary now located Louisville, Kentucky, president, 1889. Delivered Lyman Beecher lectures on preaching at Yale, 1889. Occasional contributor to Religious Herald.
